Family activities in Wānaka
There are very few experiences in Wānaka where the whole family actually stays in the same experience. Not just in the same place, but really in the same moment.
No splitting up, no figuring out who wants what, no waiting around for each other. Just… time together. Here’s a guide to the ultimate family experience, your own private sauna session in Wānaka:
What actually happens in a family sauna
Most family activities require someone to adapt. A hike needs everyone at the same pace. A restaurant needs the kids to sit still. A movie needs everyone to want to watch the same thing.
The sauna removes all of that.
What we actually see, week after week: families who arrive a bit scattered — some keen, some sceptical, one person who needed convincing — and within twenty minutes, everyone's just sitting there.
The teenager who hadn't looked up from their phone all day is suddenly having a real conversation. The grandparent and the seven-year-old are in the same room, sweating, laughing about it together.
It's not magic. It's just heat. Heat that makes everyone the same.
Two bookings, one outcome
Last week we had two private sessions back-to-back.
First: a 13th birthday. Girls arriving loudly and slightly unsure, most of them walking into a sauna for the first time. By the end, they were flat out on the benches, quiet, not wanting to leave.
Then: a 30th. Women from Queenstown who chose heat over a restaurant and wine. Different energy, different decade. Same ending.
That's the thing about a private sauna, it becomes yours. Your pace, your playlist. Just your group connecting to the raw nature of Wānaka and melting in the heat of the sauna. It's the format that works best for families and groups, which is why it's our most booked option.
But is it safe for everyone?
For most people, yes. Sauna has solid research behind it, particularly around circulation and relaxation. Cold immersion is always optional. If you have specific health concerns, check with your GP first.
Under-16s need a parent or guardian and are welcome in any session type - we just encourage no young kids in the Silent Session. Private booking makes sense for families and, with a large group, the cost of our private sauna experience per person is very reasonable.
The main takeaway
The private sauna sessions at The Sauna Wānaka are becoming one of the most booked family experiences in Wānaka, and it makes sense. It's one of the only activities where even the person who needed convincing is the last one to get out.
Your space. Your pace. Your playlist.
